Re “Democrats Face Significant Drop in Black Voters” and “Harris Fighting to Bring Back a Trusted Bloc” (front page, Oct. 13 and 15):

It was disheartening to see the polling that reveals dwindling support for Kamala Harris among African American males and Latino Americans in general.

Though a majority of these groups still favors the vice president, the lowered support for her as compared with previous presidential elections is noteworthy and is obviously worrying Democrats. It would certainly not bode well for the country at large if this turns out to be pivotal to a Harris defeat.

The economy, always a key factor in voter sentiment, is definitely having an outsized effect this time. This election, however, calls for far broader consideration by voters because there’s so much more at stake.

It’s therefore perplexing why Donald Trump’s bigotry and obsession with immigration — which pervade every aspect of his politics and have always formed the core of his grievance messaging — is not disqualifying for all Latino and Black voters.

For groups that are unquestionably integral parts of the American story, choosing Mr. Trump in this election would hardly be in their best interests.
